The Six Line Roulette Bet
In roulette, there are two kinds of bets: inside bets, and outside bets. An outside bet is a bet placed on a range of numbers (such as, for example, one to eighteen), a color, or a set of numbers. On the other hand, an inside bet is when a person wagers that the roulette ball will land in the pocket of a particular number, or in one of a group of numbers that are arranged in a certain way on the roulette table.
The Six Line bet is an example of an inside bet. On the roulette table, the numbers on the roulette wheel are arranged in numerical order, in twelve rows of three. A Six Line is when a person bets that the winning number in a spin will be one of the six numbers in two adjoining rows of three. In a manner of speaking, a Six Line bet is like two Street bets attached to one another.
A Street bet is a bet placed on three horizontally adjoining numbers. An example of a Street would be if a person wagers that the ball will land in pocket number seven, eight, or nine. A Six Line, on the other hand, would be when a person wagers that the ball will land in any one of the following pockets: seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, or twelve.
Assuming that the roulette wheel being used is an American roulette wheel, which possesses two green pockets -one numbered zero, and the other double zero- the odds of winning with a Six Line bet would be 5.33 to one.
In order to maintain a house edge or house average though, most casinos do not factor in the two green pockets, when calculating for the payout. This means, for example, that on a Straight Up bet, where a person bets on a single number, their odds against winning would be thirty-seven to one, but the payout they will receive for every dollar that they have wagered, would be thirty-five dollars, plus their initial investment.
Returning to the matter of a payout for a Six Line bet though: if the odds for a Six Line are 5.33 to one, then the payout is five dollars to every dollar that a person has wagered, plus a return of the amount that they had put in. While still a relatively good payout, this is of course, a fraction of what a person can receive if they had made a Straight Up bet, instead. Of course, the problem with betting Straight Up, is that the odds are tipped much farther against your favor.
